TV programming in NZ has and is undergoing huge change with multiple content options being offered by local and international On-Demand Streaming Services. Some of these services are free, while others require a monthly or annual paid subscription.
So, how do you choose?
The choice is very personal and often will come down to cost vs content, for example, does the On-Demand Streaming Service have the Movies, TV shows and/or Sport that you want to watch at a price you can afford?
Both NZ’s Free-To-Air TV companies (TVNZ and ThreeNow) along with SkyOpen (the old Prime TV – now part of SkyTV) offer free On-Demand Streaming services but with paid advertisements.
Over the last couple of years, the amount of free On-Demand content offered by TVNZ+ and ThreeNow has slowly been growing. Some of the content is older movies and TV shows but some popular TV shows are available the next day after they show in the US.
Internationally, YouTube Premium, Disney+ and Amazon Prime are available in NZ along with Netflix, however these are all paid subscription services. These services have large amounts of content, both recent Movies and TV shows along with older Movies and TV shows.
Another option is Plex, which we have done extensive testing of. Plex has free Movies and TV shows but has a very limited content library.
However, Plex can be customised to stream your own personal content, if it is available, using your own device, for example, your computer, Apple Mac, or Android phone.
For this function to work, specific software needs to be installed on your computer, Mac or Android phone; along with some basic knowledge to be able to configure the media libraries, which is easily learnable.
If you would like more information on any of the On-Demand Streaming Services or on setting up and using Plex, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us.
