The email landscape is changing, as they say the only constant in life is change.

Spark’s Xtra email service is now charging users for email and with other ISPs (Internet Service Providers) in New Zealand looking to do the same, is it time to look to “free” international Cloud-based email providers?

When it comes to “free” Cloud-based email for the home user, there are really only three choices: Google Gmail and Microsoft’s Outlook.com service are the biggest two with Apple’s iCloud service third.

So, which one of the three is better or the one to choose? The answer is: consider the service that gives you the most benefits for your situation and/or needs.

The advantages of moving to cloud-based email are many, from the increased mailbox size allowances, to being able to access your email on the go on mobile devices – i.e. tablets, mobile phones etc.

For business email, the choices are similar but also different, with Google Suite and Microsoft 365 being the two choices.

Both Microsoft 365 and Google Suite are subscription services, with monthly or yearly subscription fees; they both have technical requirements, for example, selecting a domain name if you don’t already have one, changing Internet records etc.

For businesses, these services also have other functions that come as part of their different packages, like increased security and spam filtering, the ability to easily share mailboxes between multiple people and being able to easily share and jointly edit documents.
