Do you have a Gmail account?  Google Gmail is a very popular email platform, with approximately 2 billion users sending an estimated 350 billion emails every day!

But, due to Gmail’s popularity, attackers are always dreaming up new improved ways of attacking the platform and the people that use it.

In response, Google has recently released a number of security updates for its global Gmail system.  One of those security features is the new Gmail subscription management, which fixes a security issue you probably didn’t know you had, however, that doesn’t make it any less critical.

While Gmail has always done a great job of filtering spam from view, some does make it into your inbox, with some of it being persistent, coming in the guise of a legitimate marketing email.

But unsubscribing can be dangerous as some UNSUBSCRIBE links in emails can take you to malicious sites or malicious downloads, a known weapon in the phishing arsenal.

Gmail has had the perfect defensive protection for this issue for a while: one-click UNSUBSCRIBE, however, it hasn’t been available to all users.  As Google goes global with the subscription management upgrade for Gmail it will become a feature available to all users.

This new tool provides a single-pane-of-glass view of your email subscriptions, sorted by the most frequent sender and displaying just how many emails each has sent. It also adds a new UNSUBSCRIBE button.

Rather than having to visit a potentially dangerous site yourself or risk a potentially malicious download, Gmail handles the unsubscribe request safely on your behalf.

The new manage subscriptions feature has already started to roll out and can be found in the navigation bar in the top-left corner of your inbox.
