A very sophisticated and subtle scam involving a new printer being purchased and the purchaser then needing help installing it is doing the rounds again and due to its subtlety is continuing to catch people unawares.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As tech has become more complex, purchasing a printer and plugging it in is no longer possible.  All printers now require an installation process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Basic instructions are included with a new printer on how to set it up and connect it to your device to enable you to print via the printer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, this is where this subtle scam comes into play, usually using one of two methods:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n
  1. Asking you to call a given telephone number; or<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Registering your details via a website.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Often the support telephone number to call for assistance to install the printer is the telephone number of a scammer<\/strong>!  OR once your personal details have been recorded via a website, a scammer calls you<\/strong> pretending to be from the printer company or a third-party company. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    This next step is common to this scam and most scams! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The scammer requests remote access to your computer, laptop or mobile device, advising you the device has security issues, selling you \u201csoftware\u201d, often infected with viruses or malware, and will always<\/strong> request payment of money before undertaking any \u201cwork\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    DO NOT PAY the scammer any money.  Do NOT give them your bank details.  It\u2019s a scam! <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
