Printers (of all makes, models and types), are either loved or hated in generally equal measures with very little middle ground.
However, printers are the forgotten hole in the vast majority of Cybersecurity plans as most people and/or organisations just think of them as printing stuff, scanning stuff or very old school – faxing stuff.
However, printers are a computer in their own right and suffer from software bugs and other security issues. There have been a number of cases over the last few years of printers being compromised and becoming the gateway into a network for bad actors to then move through the network.
As a generalisation, printers are just dropped onto a network (either cabled ethernet or wireless) and left to get on with the job with no real thought on securing them from cyberattack or keeping them updated with the latest firmware.
As printers become ever more “smarter”, this will become even more of an issue.
SecureSphere believes that this behavior needs to change, and printers should be treated like IoT, OT or SCADA and be secured into their own separate firewalled networks along with planning and implementation of regular firmware updates from manufacturers.
SecureSphere can help with this process. Contact Us today to see how we can help businesses and organisations secure their printers from cyberattack.
