Do you own an Apple Mac and do you know how secure it really is?

For years, many believed that Apple Mac operating systems, commonly known as MacOS, were immune to malware and didn’t require antivirus protection. That might have been true in the past, but the landscape has changed, and unfortunately not positively.

With over 100 million users worldwide, MacOS has become a prime target for cybercriminals.

In mid-2024, a new threat emerged: Banshee MacOS Stealer. This malware is designed to steal system data, deceive users, bypass detection, and remove sensitive information.

Then in November 2024 multiple variants of Banshee began circulating.  Fuelled by shifts in the cybercriminal underworld, these threats dramatically increased the risk.

Currently, Banshee targets web browsers including Chrome, Edge, Vivaldi, Yandex, and Opera.  It often masquerades as legitimate downloads for popular apps like Telegram and Signal.

Even more alarming, Banshee exploits vulnerabilities in some two-factor authentication systems and uses realistic-looking system prompts to trick users into revealing their MacOS passwords.

Three tips to help you stay protected:

  • Download with caution: Only get apps from trusted sources. Take a moment to verify who you’re dealing with.
  • Use XProtect—but don’t rely on it alone: MacOS includes basic antivirus protection but pairing it with a reputable third-party solution enhances your defence.
  • Invest in a premium antivirus: Paid tools typically update more often and often include bonus features like virtual private networks (VPNs) and password managers for extra security.

MacOS has always been popular and continues to grow in popularity, but unfortunately so does its appeal to hackers.
